First lady melania trump. First lady mckinley. I feel so sorry for the ones who hate. Hate is an unattractive LANIA TRUMP IS THE FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED and Respct from Texas. CBS should be ashamed of themself for the way it presents the news. This was an odd story to write. It was mostly written for fun, but it included a lot of elements that could do with further explanations, but I just didn't have the time to fully dive into everything in one story. I'll likely touch on some of these elements again in the future, should the mood grip me. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Deathworlder. It’s a common term in the Union – denoting a species that has evolved and flourished on a planet that is classified as a Deathworld. A Deathworld… well, there are a lot of different definitions. Not everyone agrees where the scale ends or begins, so some of the lower-ranking Deathworlds are often classified as high-intensity Conflict worlds instead. Varda was no such world. It was a world so inhospitable that it designed one of the most gruesomely insatiable Deathworlder species that the galaxy had ever seen. Like most Deathworlders, they were hive-minded arthropods. Like most hive-minds, they evolved with specific castes within their species that performed certain tasks. Queens ingested biomass to reproduce, and the larvae would develop into either soldier-class or worker-class drones. It was remarkably simple in its design, which was partially why it was so damned effective. Soldiers were quadrupeds. Their back legs were thick and stocky, the black chitinous exoskeleton resembling the hind legs of a grasshopper. The front stalks were thinner, but ended in a gruesome, razor sharp scythe that extended past the foremost joint. The scythes would fold inwards against the forelimb during travel, forcing them to walk on the knobbed joint when not pouncing on prey. Underneath the abdomen rested two tiny grasping limbs that lay tucked against its underbelly. The limb has tiny claws for gripping and tearing on a 3-digit ‘hand’. The head sported two massive mandibles that extended outwards like the blades of a pair of scissors. The mandibles were lined with serrated teeth for tearing into flesh and plant matter, allowing them to tear chunks into more manageable pieces. Atop its head rested five compound eyes that matched their chitin with their inky blackness. Workers were very similar to the soldiers, though they lacked the massive pouncing legs and the scythes. They also had a full six limbs instead of four, and every one of those limbs had the same grasping and cutting appendage that the Soldiers had tucked against their undersides. Also, while it wasn’t uncommon for a soldier to be a meter and a half in length, the largest worker would still measure shy of a full meter. Queens were a different beast altogether. Fully grown they would often measure more than five meters long, their bodies shaped more like a caterpillar, with a softer carapace allowing for expansion as they developed eggs. Vardanna are a hitchhiker species. Their eggs can be encased in a tough, almost metallic shell by the Queen. These shells can be plastered onto the surface of a ship via worker drones. Safe in their shell, these eggs can survive in the vacuum of space and even faster than light travel without a protective shield. Upon detecting a oxygen-rich atmosphere, the shells will become saturated by the gas and become brittle. The shells break, and the eggs are deposited into the ground. Rarely does a life-bearing planet retain its food chain for more than 50 years after the infestation has started. On planets without an FTL capable species, this timeline generally dwindles to 10 years. The first landing of a ship on Varda is widely considered to be the greatest fuck-up in the galaxy. Our planet was supposed to suffer that fate. We would have, were it not for the Havoc soldiers. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A mother frantically clung to her child, her eyes wild with a combination of fear and adrenaline as she kept one hand over the child’s mouth. The two of them were huddled inside of a small dwelling, pressed up against the building’s only doorway. Outside the dwelling, the sound of combat echoed between the alleys that separated houses. The titanic thud and resounding boom of heavy artillery echoed across the landscape, interspersed with the shrill ring of laser weaponry from the south. A shuffling could be heard from the other side of the doorway. A soft series of clicks reverberated through the wood, and a dull scratching could be heard. In the distance, the sound of combat grew quieter. The bursts of laser fire steadily disappeared into the southern reaches of the city. The mother’s eyes grew wide as the door bulged inwards slightly. Another series of clicks sounded, this time more agitated. The door rattled loudly as something heavy slammed against it. The color drained from the mother’s pale green cheeks, and she couldn’t stop her child from letting out a terrified wail at the noise. A screech resounded from the other side of the door, high in pitch and causing the crescent-moon window’s glass to rattle by the door. This time it was the mother’s turn to scream as a long, curved blade emerged from the wood mere centimeters away from her head. Another screech sounded in response to the mother’s scream, and a second blade embedded itself where the mother’s throat had been a second earlier. Still clutching her child, the mother shrieked in fear as she backed away from the door as it was slowly ripped apart. The noise only agitated her attacker, resulting in a more frenzied dismantling of the wooden barricade. No longer could the artillery be heard. Likewise, all of the noises of combat seemed to have vanished. Pressed into a corner with her child protectively behind her, the mother could only watch in horror as the door was swatted aside by a final flick of the massive bladed limbs of the Vardanna soldier. She screamed again in spite of herself, the wail accompanied by one from her child as she stared at the four-legged predator. So distracted was it by the scene in front of it, the Vardanna failed to notice the larger predator behind it. A massive limb reached down towards the Vardanna, five fingers closing around the space between its head and thorax as the giant bug was lifted clean off the ground. It hissed and let out a screech of defiance as its head rotated a full 180 degrees, the massive mandibles spreading open to clamp around the arm of the offending intruder. The serrated teeth scraped noisily across a high-density metal alloy, failing to do much more than lightly scratch the paint of the armored limb. The rest of its body rotated to match its head, and after bracing its hind legs against the abdomen of the creature holding it, the Vardanna swung one of those deadly blades at the neck of the creature that held it. The blade was stopped short as it clanged loudly against a slim, metal appendage that had reared up from the back of the bipedal creature. “Ohh, dangerous. Nice catch, Gemini. ” The words reverberated from the head… no, the helmet of the creature holding an apex predator by its throat rather effortlessly. The mother could only stare on abject horror as the head of the Vardanna was separated from its body with a quick twist of the biped’s wrist. “One day you’re gonna get yourself killed because you can’t take anything seriously. ” The reply reverberated from the same speaker system on the helmet, but the voice had a distinctly feminine and almost robotic quality. The metal appendage shifted rapidly, grasping the Vardanna’s scythe limb and dismembering the lowest joint with a swift twist. “That is how you disarm a Vardanna, Danny. Shall we practice on the other limb, or do you think you can handle it from here? ” “Yeah, yeah. Save the lecture for the debriefing, Gem. We’ve got civilians to tend to. ” The large figure appeared to be talking to itself, alternating voices and even… waving one of its primary appendages towards the thinner rear arm in a dismissive manner. The rear arm didn’t appear to want to argue further, as it simply receded back over its shoulder before disappearing from sight. It was then that the cowering parent got a good look at her ‘savior’. It was clear that it was dressed in a combat suit. Fully covered in metal plating, the suit appeared to have traditional gaps around joints to allow movement. The entire suit was painted a sandy brown color, with an opaque black visor covering the face of the helmet. “We’re set to auto-translate Suvazi, right? She can hear me? ” The figure asked itself, before the visor on its helmet turned transparent, revealing the face that hid behind the helmet. The mother blinked in confusion, her eyes narrowing. It was… a human? Humans were a brand new species to the Union. They’d only been discovered by accident some 35-40 years ago while testing their warp drives for the first time. They’d accidentally warped into a Union-hosted system while stress-testing their FTL technology. That was a pretty big splash into the galactic pool, and humans had spent every year since then trying to one-up themselves. After stabilizing their FTL tech and learning of the Union, they had immediately requested entry, wanting to enter into the galactic community. Ambassadors had been sent to the home world of every species in the Union, and before long humans had been involving themselves in most every matter that the Union faced. Some had taken offense to the intrusion and had purposefully excluded humanity from their affairs and their planets. The Suvazi were one such species. “Yes, ding-dong, she can understand you. ” The higher pitch voice sounded again, and this time a soft purple glow could be seen emanating from the edges of the visor, keeping rhythm with the syllables that accompanied the voice. “I can calculate how many hydrogen atoms Sol fuses every second, but you think I’d forget to turn on your translator? ” ‘Danny’ rolled his eyes, before glancing towards the Suvazi woman. “We’re gonna take care of everything, okay? I just need you…” He pulled out two small electronic plugs, rolling them across the floor towards the Suvazi. “…to put those in. ” He gestured to the back of his own neck, where he knew the Suvazi had their auricular organs. “The rest of my squadron is going to be with us shortly, okay? They’re helping your military clean up the frontlines. ” He gave her a reassuring smile, before backing away slowly, ensuring to drag the Vardanna corpse with him. “W-Wait! ” The woman cried suddenly, before gesturing towards her child. “Please, I need you to take my son. Get him out of here. Leave me if you have to, but please…” She had tears in her eyes, and Danny felt his heart sink as he watched the sight. “Normally I would… but we’re pretty deep in the shit out here. The Vardanna pushed your military pretty far back. I was only out this far because I’m going to destroy the nest. ” He responded, offering her a smile. “Even if I were to head back with your kid, there’s no guarantee I could get him there alive. The Vardanna specialize in…” He trailed off, before shaking his head. “However, I’m not gonna leave you here defenseless. ” He moved towards the destroyed front entrance, rapping on the frame of the building as he tried to estimate what it was made out of. “It appears to be a type of composite similar to concrete. The Vardanna could dig through it, but it would take them time. I imagine they’ll be too caught up with us to give that venture much thought. ” Gemini chimed in, that familiar tingle emanating from the subdermal implant whenever she began to run her calculations. He turned back to the woman in the corner, offering her a grin. “Don’t worry about the Vardanna. I’ll be leading them away from the civilian areas. Also…” He pulled two rods from his back pocket, drilling one into the top of the doorway, and one at the bottom, so that their lengths stretched across the frame. A transparent film flared to life between them. He waved his hand through it as a demonstration. “This is genetically locked. Vardanna can’t pass through. Their eyes also can’t absorb the wavelengths of light that can pass through this barrier. They won’t even know you’re home. ” He chucked the Vardanna’s blade arm at the barrier for emphasis, watching as it was rather violently repelled. “See? Perfectly safe. If you happen to see any other civilians, tell them to come inside with you. But under no circumstance should you try to leave. The Vardanna WILL find you. ” He warned, staring down the alien woman. “My team should be here within the hour. Wait for them. They’ll evacuate you and everyone else in this city until we can take care of this. ” Satisfied that the Suvazi wasn’t about to argue with him, he turned on his heel, marching towards the city square, where the satellite imagery had detected the emergent tunnel from the hive’s subterranean network. This network was one of many on the planet, and a team much like his own had been dispatched to each and every one. “Boombox, you’re behind schedule. What’s the holdup? ” The transmission crackled in his ear as he peered from side to side, watching the skittering forms of about a dozen Vardanna workers sifting through various bins and containers throughout the city center, clearly scavenging for food. At the sound of his footsteps they tense and turned towards him, low hisses echoing at the intrusion. “Ran into a civvy in that hotspot you lot directed me to. She’d been pinned by a soldier. Would you mind telling Artemis to secure that position on the way back to the city perimeters? I secured the building, but I didn’t have time to properly check on their condition. ” He replied into his comms set. A moment passed as he carefully surveyed the worker drones. Had they been soldiers, they would have attacked on sight, but worker class drones tended to avoid combat when possible. Though given the loud clicks they were giving off, and the periodic screeching that permeated the air, the soldiers were certainly on their way. “Roger, Boombox. Artemis has been notified. She also wanted me to inform you that if you took these assignments more seriously, it probably wouldn’t take you so long to clear out one building. ” He could practically feel Gemini’s gloating from the implant. “In any case, we can see you’re by the entrance. You’re clear to bait the trap. ” “Not a word. ” He muttered to Gemini. “Not a god damn word. I don’t know when you two find time to chat, or why her AI never contacts me so that we can shit-talk her behind her back, but I DO know that it is officially my turn to pick the music. ” He could hear the screeching of the soldiers in the not-so-distance distance now, and he hummed to himself as his HUD cycled through the various artists in his library. He settled on a selection, lips twitching upwards. “Original, or cover? ” He pondered. Behind him, the first of the soldiers were appearing from behind the rubble of destroyed buildings. “Ah, you’re right. We’ll go with the cover this time around. ” At an unspoken signal, a pair of speakers appeared on each shoulder, one facing forward, and the other facing back. A speaker began to emit a high-pitched squeal, the noise echoing harshly off the faces of the nearby buildings. The sound sent the nearby soldiers into an absolute frenzy, causing them to charge towards him in a ferocious jumble of mandibles and claws. In the distance, a cacophony of screeches echoed across the city in response to the sound. Danny took a running start into the dark recess of the tunnel, speakers squealing incessantly as he avoided the first of the soldiers. He quickly descended into the mouth of the tunnel, his boots slipping and skidding across the eerily smooth surface of the subterranean passageway. “Alrighty Gem, let’s skate. ” The sides and bottom of the passageway was made of the same metallic substance that was used to attach eggs to ships, and was a perfect conduit for his suit’s Maglev boots. As the Maglevs fired up, he briefly felt weightless as all friction beneath him disappeared, sending him rocketing towards the innards of the tunnel system. “Well, we got their attention. Now let’s have some fun. ” He could hear the screeches and shrieks of the soldiers behind him, the sound mixing with the squeal his speakers were emitting. Each side passage he passed echoed forth a similar sound, denoting the sheer number of pissed-off bugs that his little concert was attracting. See, Vardanna hunted primarily by sound. They communicated over long distances with shrieks and screeches, and it hadn’t taken humanity very long at all to find a noise that pissed them off; the noise in question being a high-pitched squeal, like nails on a chalkboard. Inside the tunnel system, the sound reverberated off of the metallic walls perfectly, as Vardanna designed the tunnels to reflect and transmit sound waves over long distances by regurgitating a weird biometallic substance that absorbed almost no sound. The drop of a pin could be heard kilometers away by even human ears, let alone the highly-specialized auricular organs of the Vardanna. His helmet filtered the noise of course, as the sort of racket he was creating now would have deafened him several times over. He could feel the vibrations even through the thick metal of his suit. And he was still only using the one speaker. “We’re what, half a kilometer from the echo chamber, yeah? ” He asked Gemini. After hearing her confirmation and double-checking the sonar-constructed map she’d made of the tunnel network, a grin split his face. “That’s close enough. Let’s party. ” By Gemini’s command, the squealing noise spooled down before cutting out, the silence rather deafening after the racket he’d been making. “Command, this is Boombox. I’m cutting radio contact for the next three minutes or so. Tell Artemis that this one comes straight from the heart. ” He disabled his radio shortly afterwards. All four speakers activated now, the brief, piercing feedback causing a hairline split to appear in the wall of the passageway, even as the maglev boots sent him hurtling down further into the depths of the planet. “Ladies and gentlemen of the Suvazi Republic, my name is Lieutenant Daniel Haverford, and I’ll be your DJ for this extermination. ” The explosive force of the speakers reverberated through the tunnels, sending the sound miles into the crust of the planet, as well as outwards towards each and every surfacing tunnel. “This one’s for you, Arty. ” After a brief pause, the song began to play, each drumbeat cascading through the tunnel system. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Six miles away, the sounds of combat paused, as the Suvazi military and even the Vardanna froze at the sound of the reverberating voice that seemed to echo from the ground itself. Three figures in familiar combat armor stood on an overlook, their rifles discharging with uninterrupted regularity as Danny’s announcement seemingly petrified the ground forces and shook the Vardanna’s soldiers. The leftmost soldier broke into a laugh at the end of the message, her voice somewhat filtered by her helmet. “Aww, I think it’s sorta sweet. I can’t remember the last time my husband made that sort of declaration in the middle of a hostile alien extermination. ” She said dreamily, snickering to herself. On the far side of the grouping, a man let out a sigh, his particle lance cooking a hole through the center of a Vardanna’s head. “Somehow I don’t think this is going to go over well for him. He’d better hope the Admiral isn’t listening, or he’s gonna get chewed out again. ” The Suvazi troops watched in amazement as the entirety of the Vardanna assault force turned in place and made a mad dash back towards the nearest tunnel entrance point, their mandibles clacking angrily. The center figure shook as she lifted her head, a lock of stark red hair partially obscuring her face behind her visor for a moment as her cheek twitched. “That god damned idiot. I really am going to kill him. ” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “… build me up build me up, buttercup baby, just to let me down let me down, and mess me around? Yeah then worst of all, ” Danny cruised through the tunnel system, feeling it finally starting to level out as he approached the echo chamber, where the Queen’s typically gave birth to the young. “You never call baby when you say you will! Say you will! ” He had since deactivated his microphone, choosing instead to simply sing along to the internal playback of the song. On the side of his visor he could see Gemini’s ‘form’ dancing alongside his peripheral vision. It was a colored projection on the digital screen of his visor’s HUD, depicting a solid purple figure dancing and spinning in tune to the music. She even had a little microphone with which she pantomimed singing along with him. “And baby, baby, try to find… a little time, then I’ll make you mine. I’ll be home, waiting by the phone for youuuu! ” He skidded to a halt inside of the echo chamber, grinning at the sight that greeted him. The nest had three Queens, and all three of them were lying on the cool metallic flooring, splayed out from their final death throes. Orange goo leaked from their mouths and around their eyes, with streams of it originating from the auricular cavities behind each of their mandibles. The inside of a Vardanna’s nest was a perfect receptacle for sound waves. It was how they hunted and communicated, and how they managed to ambush and destroy any and all of the armies that attempted to enter their nests in search of the Queens. Their auricular organs had been highly specialized to pick up subtle sound waves, and in an environment where sound waves could bounce near infinitely, a prolonged, high-intensity exposure of sound waves would cause their organs to burst and hemorrhage. “To you I’m a toy, but I could be the boy you adore… if you’d just let me know. ” Unable to help himself, he mirrored his AI, slowly dancing in tune to the music as the song played itself out. “Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more – why do I need you so? ” A shifting mass to his right caught his attention, and he scooted backwards just in time to avoid the scythe-claw of a massive soldier drone as it cut clean through the metallic flooring. “I need you I need you, more than anyone, darlin’. You know that I have from the staaart! So build me up build me up, buttercup, don’t break my heeeaaaart! ” The last of the guard drones, no doubt. It was impressive that it hadn’t died yet, as it was freely bleeding from its eyes and mouth, even as it blindly tried to locate the source of the thunderous music in the echo chamber. Not one to prolong the suffering of a creature unnecessarily, Danny unloaded a single tungsten round from his wrist-mounted magcannon, causing the back of the drone’s head to explode outwards instantly. “… uild me up… buttercup, don’t break my heeeeaaaart. ” As the final instrumentals faded out, Danny was left with a staggering silence as the final moments of the song echoed loudly through the outgoing tunnels. With a click he switched on his radio again, a coy grin gracing his features. “Broadcast complete, command. How’re we looking up top? We need an encore? ” “Negative, Boombox. Ground forces report all surface hostiles retreating into their tunnels. Can you confirm termination of the Queen? ” Was the curt reply, to which he responded by attaching an image file of the three massive bodies behind him. “Three Queens? Highly unusual. No wonder the Suvazi were overrun so quickly. All hostiles in the echo tunnels appear to have been terminated, so you’re free to extract. Wipe your feet before you come back up here, Boombox. I don’t want any of that orange shit in my cruiser. ” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3/23 - Cleaned up some typos and formatting errors. Changed 'helium' to 'oxygen' with regards to Vardanna atmospheric requirements after some deliberation of criticism.
